I don't have any full batreps, but here's my overall review of the weekend:

Quick note: I'm linking pictures here because I have no idea what the best way to post images on this forum is. Any ideas?

Mechanicon 2014 Trip Report

Overall, I had a great time. The tournament was well-organized, the terrain was beautiful, and there wasn't one Wave Serpent spam list in sight! I'll definitely return for next year. The venue was pleasant, and the tables were fantastic. They were only grouped by twos, so you could easily get around to the other side if you had to. The tournament was at 1850 points, and each list needed to be battle forged. However, there was no limit to how many CADs you could take, so there was still a good amount of exploitation.

So, 5 missions, each with different victory conditions. All of the missions had Slay the Warlord, Linebreaker, and First Blood in addition to their primary objectives.
1st mission: 6 objectives, each worth 3, scored at the end of the game. Dawn of War.
2nd mission: 2 objectives in each deployment zone, each worth 4, one objective in the exact center, worth 1. Hammer and Anvil.
3rd mission: Tactical objectives: draw one at 1st turn, draw 1 on any subsequent turns where the player starts without a card; one objective card at a time. Discarding as normal. Dawn of War.
4th mission: Kill Points. Dawn of War.
5th mission: Random objectives: 1 worth 4, 2 worth 3, 2 worth 2, 1 worth 1. Diagonal setup (whatever it's called).

I brought a mechanized AM list that looked a little like this:
CCS, 2 melta, 2 plasma
2 ML2 Psykers
2 Vet squads in Chimeras w/ 2 meltas
2 Vet squads in Chimeras w/ 3 plasmas
3 Armored Sentinels w/ plasma cannons
2 Vendettas
2 Leman Russes
1 Demolisher
You guys have all seen my army, so I won't spam you with pictures of it.

1st mission
My opponent's Army:

1 CAD Space Wolves, 1 CAD Grey Knights, 1 Allies Space Marines, Medium-sized bunker w/ escape hatch.

Totally got hosed in this one. His GK's dropped in and cleansing flamed most of my Chimeras, and his Centurions got out the escape hatch and started taking out my Russes. My inexperience with GKs and escape hatches really showed, here. Dude was nice, though. The army looked great, but I found out later it was not painted by him. Final score: 28-0, him.

2nd Mission
My opponent's army:

1 CAD Dark Eldar - the older codex. The new codex didn't make the rules cutoff date.

Lots of raiders, couple of ravagers, a razorwing. He seized the initiative and I thought I was reamed, but he proceeded to not hit or penetrate a single thing with all of his dark lances. My tanks had no problem on my turn, though. Highlights include my demolisher single-handedly destroying 2 ravagers and 2 raiders, and a shaken Chimera destroying the razorwing in one round of shooting, the turn it came in. Result: 21-4, me.

3rd mission
My opponent's army:

2 CADs Tyranids

The four Flyrants were all he needed to totally demolish me. I ended up killing one, but the other three completely wrecked my shit. The rest of his army did nothing but contest objectives. Still a fun game, though, dude was super nice. He actually lives near me, so we'll play again in the future. Result: 16-1, him.

4th mission
My opponent's army:
http://i.imgur.com/E2NHG7K.jpg
1 CAD CSM, 1 CAD Deamons

Belakor. That fucking guy. This game was a ton of fun. Inexperience once again raised it's head because I had no idea beasts moved so damn fast. It was kill points so I had a bunch of crap in reserve. Started out bad, but I ended up picking up 7 KPs to his 9 (he got bonus pts for the win), so it turned out to be pretty close. Result 14-7, him.

5th mission
My opponent's army:
http://i.imgur.com/Tu4Lq3m.jpg
1 CAD Sapce Marines done up like Storm Troopers from Star Wars with TIE Fighter Stormtalons and a Lambda Shuttle Stormraven.

Best game of the tournament, right here. We were both well out of it, so we were able to focus on pure fun and action. Lots of things died, on both sides. Late game, my Vendettas proved to be awesome (again) and one of my Leman Russes just would quit kicking ass. He had a Typhoon land speeder that would not stop kicking my ass, though. Took out 2 chimeras and a squad all on it's own. Great game. Result: 25-3, me.

At the end of it, I actually won something! I was awarded with Best Overall (battle points + painting) for Astra Militarum!

I want to thank Colin for still being tall as hell, Carl for driving and being an enormous baby pretty much all the time, and John for being a festering pile of human garbage. Pretty sure I have fleas from your couch, ebola from your floor, and AIDS from your bathroom.

But seriously, the hospitality shown by Colin, Carl, and especially John was amazing. You guys helped give me a truly great weekend, and I am really looking forward to coming back up in January.

Great write up and photos.

I hope the "army he didn't paint" didn't win best painted :!:

As a group did everyone think there was "more fluff" than "power stuff"?

Good photos & report Dan. You can post photos in the forum via the "Upload attachment" tab below the edit box. It's kind of a pain though, I wouldn't recommend it for more than a photo or two.

What did you guys think of that 3rd mission, with the Maelstrom tactical objectives? It wasn't adjusted at all to deal with drawing meaningless cards?

It was the only mission I outright disliked, for all the typical reasons I hate maelstrom missions. Great opponent, but I'm 90% sure my victory had more to do with the random objectives I got that were useful vs. his garbage ones.

I love the concept but hate the execution (on GW's part). I wouldn't have used them "as is" in a tournament either--this was probably my biggest complaint as well. My game with my round 3 opponent was very close until the very end as well, although he got slightly unlucky with his draws (control every obj on the table for D3+3 VPs--WTF GW?!). Both of us got a couple of tough objectives to score location wise, but he had a mobile Storm full of Scouts that I was unable to catch, which he used to great effect, while I was generally able to apply the combination of LR/dirge caster + Bloodletters to the ones he was guarding with tactical marines (he was the "Imperial" SM player using Sentinels of Terra with the TIE Stormtalons).

If I just *had* to use the Maelstrom stuff in a tournament, I would create a custom scenario where everyone was allowed a hand of X cards (where X is 5-8 maybe), but they could only play/complete one per turn. I think it would go: draw up to X, play one, play turn, score obj, discard any number of cards, end turn. I think that would largely mitigate the crap results that people might get stuck with otherwise. You almost have to score an objective every turn to stay competitive in this format. I think I scored 4 or 5 out of six turns, whereas he only scored 3, with the major difference in the game outcome being the fact that I had almost tabled him and also scored First Blood, Slay the Warlord and Linebreaker in the process. The downside of my proposal is that you'd almost have to require each table to have a set of the cards, as that would be way too much record keeping otherwise.

On a somewhat unrelated note, that was probably my best game of the tournament in terms of the strengths of our relative positions throughout the game and my tactical decisions to get there. I thought I did a great job of counter-deploying using LoS blocking stuff to mitigate the firepower of his Dev squads, and I started the game off using my screening congo line of zombies to slingshot Typhus about 18" across the table and into combat to wipe his drop pod Sternguard. Be'lakor also Terrified a Dev squad off the table and Psychic Shrieked another combat squad in the same psychic phase, which was probably the most useful he's been to me in the psychic phase since I started using him. I also had a bunch of Bloodletters running amok through his tacticals, protected from overwatch fire by my dirge casters. The icing on the caked was when I splashed a jinking Stormtalon with my twin-linked lascannons. To come full circle back to the original point though, despite the lop-sided conditions tactically, I didn't really feel comfortable with my lead up until the last turn or two. At any moment, I felt like a run of good luck on his part when drawing his objective cards, and/or bad luck on my part, could have snatched victory out of my grasp.

From Friday night's game against Al Edel's Warhound, six Vendettas, Thunderbolt and Lightning list. According to him this was his "just for hahas" list; I didn't find it quite as amusing. However, if the game had ended on Turn 5 I would have won 7-3, but as it was it continued another turn and I lost by the same score.

I won the Mechanicon BFG tourney again this year. Sadly only three of us showed up to play. With GW no longer making models for BFG I feel that that is going to be a growing trend.

I have to say that I wasn't that much of a fan of the venue. What did other people think? I did appreciate how close it was. Last years event was way way up in northern BFE but the venue was pretty swank. Was it the same cost as last year? How was attendance on Saturday? It seemed a little light on Friday night but maybe that was an illusion caused by the height of the room.
