John, Albert, and I played a game of Steam tonight. I had previously avoided it as I'm vaguely hostile to "train games." However, I'm now no longer sure what constitutes "train game" as I actually thought Steam was really good. The rules were pretty simple, I was able to read the book and pick it all up in about 15 minutes. Despite that simplicity, it's clearly a very good Euro abstract game, with little randomness and a lot of non-aggressive player interactions. We played the basic game, but the standard game clearly does a very good job of not making the rules more complex at all yet making the gameplay even more complex and challenging. Highly recommended for fans of this type of game (Power Grid, Caylus, etc).
